Damn, this makes three of them scattered on various websites. Even I can't write that much interesting stuff all the time. So from time to time I'll just be copying and pasting stuff over all three of them.
Ahhh, the new digs. Not too bad. Less storage space and a decidedly smaller kitchen. But size wise I can’t argue. Alright back yard. Not what we had but this is the desert and this is Vegas. What I have is bigger than most so I won’t bitch. Too much anyway.
The neighborhood is okay. Nice looking certainly. I am not too sure about the inhabitants. I am accustomed to walking down the street and nodding or greeting people. Strangers and not alike. On several occasions my pleasant greetings have been mocked and laughed at. I don’t like it. Is it that hard to be courteous and polite?
People here apparently have never taken drivers ed. Going anywhere is literally taking your life in your hands. And talk about rude! Unless you know exactly where you need to be, prepare to be honked at, cussed out, flipped off and everything just for trying to change lanes! No one uses a turn signal, no one yields, hell, they barely stop at a stop sign and bitch at me when I do. I will probably be in an accident here before a year has gone by.
My biggest problem currently has been finding my way around and I finally figured out part of my spatial confusion. You see, in Nebraska I lived south of everything I required. Shopping, the kids’ school, the base etc…. Therefore left was west and right east. I was orientated based on the drive UP. I always knew what direction I was facing/heading there.
Here I am North from everything. So I was getting comfuzzled as all hell when my spouse was trying to have me memorize the major streets and such. I kept wanting to go west-left when west is now on my right (based on where I leave my house from). During the day, not so bad here since I have a mountain directly to my North, and Mount Charleston is to the West ( that’s the one with snow!). All fine well and good….Until I can’t SEE the damn things anymore…..Like at night…..I’ve been lost more often than not when I drive at night cause my mountains are not visible….Bah. I am sure it’s only a temporary thing then I’ll be able to navigate around more confidently.
My intro to the city was rather amusing.
It was my understanding that this area only gets about 3-5 inches of rainfall a year. And that the monsoon season was during July to September. Well, as my hubby and I were chatting over his final smoke of the evening, it starts to rain. I move to bring all the stuff that shouldn’t get wet…kids toys, the folding chairs (you know the ones with the padded seats). My dear hubby says…’No no. Leave it. It will stop in a few minutes.’ As he’s the one who’s lived here and should know what he’s talking about I leave it and follow him to bed.
I wake up the next morning, and it hasn’t STOPPED raining. And I have about three inches of water in the aquarium I left out there cause it only ‘sprinkles’ in Vegas. Was this a fluke? Nope, cause it proceeded to rain for the next two days. Record rainfall amounts usher in my first week in Nevada. Wonder if I am about to witness the transformation of a desert to a savanna?
Freak weather patterns aside, there have been a few nice omens. I wouldn’t have thought I’d ever see a rainbow here. I did tho. It was just a little snippet of one, but that little snippet was colorful and bright and hung on as long as it could. I liked seeing it. It made me happy…..
And then the kids got out of school…..
